The Physics and Electronics Society
"Lumen" is one of the leading societies of Hans Raj College Working
tirelessly for the all-around development of students. Even the name
of the society has a deep meaning. 'Lumen' is the unit of luminous
flux and signifies how intensely our society focuses on spreading
the light of knowledge. The Society organises various lectures and
seminars which give the students great opportunities to interact
with eminent personalities from the field of science. The Society
has been going strong for so many years now and is steadily
progressing year after year.
The Society held its inauguration
on 22 February 2011 which also marked the beginning of the annual
festival "Eureka". "Eureka" is a colorful blend of events ranging
from quizzes and games of art and music where the students showcase
their creativity. The special guest for the occasion was the
renowned Prof. Patrick Dasgupta from the Department of Physics and
Astrophysics, University of Delhi. The event began auspiciously with
the lighting of the lamp by Prof. Dasgupta, our Principal Dr. V.K.
Kwatra, our coordinators Dr. Manrata Soni and Dr. Chetna Jain and
the Society President Jatin Arora.
The festival began wiith an opening
lecture by Prof. Dasgupta, who was also our guest speaker for the
day. He enlightened the students on the topic "Chandrashekhar: His
Guest for Beauty and Truth in Astrophysics". The students also got
the opportunity to interact with our guest speaker after the
lecture. Prof. Dasgupta satisfied the curiosity of the students by
answering their question in great detail. The lecture was followed
by the cultural segment of 'Eureka'. A variety of events were
organised and received a terrific response. Event like the Science
Quiz, Scavenger Hunt, Three-legged race, Poster-making, Street
Music, Dictionary attracted students from various colleges. Winners
were awared with gift vouchers and also cash prizes.
With the efforts of the dedicated
coordinators and students of the Physics and Electronics Department,
the whole event turned out to be very successful. In the coming
years, 'Lumen' is bound to take giant leaps in the direction of
students welfare and fulfil its motto of spreading the Light of
knowledge.
